Editing is reviewing and changing a document by making additions, deletions, or other changes to conform to some agreed upon standard. Is the process of selection from different shots to create a narrative.
Elliptical editing is a nice way of skipping long unnecessary scenes using only two shots, for example the first shot could be shot of the character about to go to sleep and the second shot would be when the character wakes up.
